In the first half of the war, the Soviet Air Force suffered significant losses in combat equipment and personnel. However, starting from 1942, the situation was gradually changing. The production of new types of aircraft was accelerated, and there were also changes in the tactics and methods of conducting air battles. So, for example, Luftwaffe General Walter Schwabedissen, evaluating the actions of Soviet fighter pilots, noted their aggressiveness, self-confidence, stubbornness in air combat, frequent cases of self-sacrifice and disregard for danger. Also, according to his memories, some Soviet selected air units were practically not inferior to their German opponents in terms of combat skill.
